Circle/Tan/To/C1,C2

Circle Tangent to Two Circles

Creates a circle tangent to two existing circles. Type selector specifies XL/XS/YL/YS position. Tangency selector specifies Out/Out, In/In, Out/In, or In/Out.

What It Does

The Circle/Tan/To/C1,C2 operator creates a circle of specified radius that is tangent to two existing circles. The Type selector (YS/YL/XS/XL) determines the position of the new circle centre. The Tangency selector determines whether the new circle is externally or internally tangent to each reference circle.

Syntax

Circle/Tan/To, C0, C2, R

Quick Input

C: 0 C2: 1 R: 5 Type: YS YL XS XL Tangency: Out/Out In/In Out/In In/Out

Direction Selector

The Type selector (YS/YL/XS/XL) picks which of the multiple possible circle positions to use based on the centre coordinate. The Tangency selector specifies whether the new circle is externally (Out) or internally (In) tangent to C and C2 respectively.

TangencyMeaning
Out/OutNew circle externally tangent to both C and C2
In/InNew circle internally tangent to both C and C2
Out/InExternally tangent to C, internally tangent to C2
In/OutInternally tangent to C, externally tangent to C2

Worked Examples

C: 0 C2: 1 R: 5 Type: YL Tangency: Out/Out → New circle tangent to both C0 and C1 externally Centre on the YLarge side

Analytic Rule

Find circle of radius R tangent to C and C2. Type selector picks centre position (XL/XS/YL/YS). Tangency selector picks external/internal combination. Result: Exact analytic circle.

FAQ

What does Out/Out mean?

Out/Out means the new circle is externally tangent to both reference circles — it sits outside both of them touching each one at one point.

What does In/In mean?

In/In means the new circle encloses both reference circles, touching each one internally.
