XyzPilot runs entirely in a web browser. No installation, no licence dongles, no dedicated workstation. Open Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, navigate to your XyzPilot URL, and log in. The full CNC programming environment is available immediately.
This is not a compromise. It is a deliberate architectural choice — and it has significant advantages for shop-floor deployment.
The Traditional Model and Its Problems
Traditional CAD/CAM software requires local installation. This creates several problems for shop-floor deployment:
- Installation overhead — every machine that needs the software must have it installed and licensed
- Version management — keeping all installations on the same version requires IT coordination
- Hardware requirements — dedicated workstations with sufficient RAM, GPU, and storage
- Licence management — floating licences, dongle management, licence server maintenance
- Update deployment — rolling out updates across multiple machines requires planning and downtime
For a small or medium engineering shop, this overhead is significant. For a shop with machines on multiple shifts, it is a constant management burden.
The Browser-Based Advantages
- Zero installation — any machine with a supported browser can access XyzPilot immediately
- Any operating system — Windows, macOS, Linux — if it runs Edge or Chrome, it runs XyzPilot
- Always up to date — updates are deployed server-side. Every user gets the latest version automatically
- No licence management — access is controlled by user accounts, not by hardware dongles
- No IT infrastructure — no licence server, no dedicated workstation, no installation scripts
- Accessible from anywhere — the programmer can work from the office, the shop floor, or remotely
What Browser-Based Means for Performance
A common concern about browser-based software is performance. Modern browsers are highly optimised JavaScript environments. For 2D geometry computation — which is what XyzPilot does — browser performance is more than adequate.
XyzPilot's geometry engine performs all computations in a single pass using closed-form formulas. There is no iterative solving, no complex rendering pipeline, no large dataset management. The computational requirements are modest.
Security and Access Control
Browser-based deployment integrates naturally with existing IT security infrastructure:
- User authentication through company credentials
- Role-based access control — different users have access to different features
- Network-level access control — XyzPilot can be restricted to the company network
- Audit logging — all user actions can be logged centrally
The Shop-Floor Reality
On the shop floor, the programmer needs to access the CNC programming environment quickly, from whatever machine is available. A browser-based system that works on any machine — including the machine operator's terminal — is more practical than a dedicated workstation that must be walked to.
XyzPilot is designed for the shop floor. The browser-based architecture is part of that design.
